Identifying Sight words and kindness concepts

Introduction

In this unit students will cover high frequency sight words for first grade level. It is part of a larger unit being taught on social skills, this unit, caring behavior. This is a district wide unit that is being used to teach and encourage appropriate behavior in social and academic settings.

Objective

I expect the students to learn the importance of positive behavior and positive reinforcement. By the end of the lesson unit students should be able to recognize, spell, and understand the meaning of each word. On Friday, 4/9/2011 students will be asked to write, spell and explain the meaning of each word. Students will write down a one sentence description of how they can use this concept for each word. My plan for this unit is for students to understand the concept of being thankful and considerate.

Content

This section will be taught from 10:05 am to 11:30 ambreak for lunch and 5 minutes after lunch. Each day student will be taught a different word and collaborative concept. Monday word; give concept creating good feelings Tuesday word; ask concept respecting others feelings Wednesday word; thank concept letting others know that we appreciate them Thursday word; think concept problem solving critical thinking

Instructional strategies

Students will gather on the carpet I will have a story board with the word and concept on it. Short story, including pictures will be read to students then a discussion about the outcome of the story. Students will return to their desks and write sentence off the board that pertains to story. Students will write a card or note reflecting an occurrence of concept. Letter cut outs will be given to small groups and words will be applied to front page of card or note. Before being released for lunch students will be asked to apply and look for concept during their break. When students return I will call on students and discuss their findings. I will share an experience I have had pertaining to concept.

Instructional aids/resources

Story board, collaborative book for concept, construction paper, glue, writing paper, various craft supply for decorating note cards and notes, scissors, crayons, small gift (pencil, eraser, or post it pad) or thank you card to give to each student.

Evaluation

Friday's lesson will consist of a test on words for the week, a sentence will be written on bottom of the test and students will match sentence with each concept. Student will be randomly chosen to recount an occurrence of a random concept they experienced on campus during the week.
